Go on a travel adventure in Northern Norway
Northern Norway is about as close to the North Pole as most ordinary travellers get, and as such it offers an abundance of unique arctic experiences. Besides opportunities for photographing the snow-capped mountains and rugged coastline, travelling in Norway’s far north gives you the opportunity to see wildlife like whales and reindeer. As Norway’s northernmost region is situated above the Arctic Circle it also has extreme differences in seasonal daylight, giving visitors the opportunity to experience natural phenomena like the midnight sun or the northern lights.
If the northern lights are on your bucket list, it’s best to visit northern Norway in the peak winter months, from December to March. As the “northern lights belt” (also called “aurora belt”) passes directly through this region, the best places to go for viewing the aurora borealis are the cities of Tromsø and Kirkenes or in the Lofoten Islands. On a winter holiday of 4 -7 days in northern Norway you can experience the thrills of snowy adventures like dog sledding and snowmobiling with a local guide and go in search of the northern lights at night. You could even spend a night in a hotel made of snow and ice!
Another great way to see the northern lights in winter or the midnight sun in summer in Norway is by spending a few nights on a Hurtigruten cruise along the country’s picturesque west coast. This gives you the opportunity to watch the skies from the comfort of the ship, in addition to optional daytime shore excursions in ports of call such as Nordkapp (North Cape).

Note: If you wish to do some scenic driving, we recommend a road trip from Oslo to the fjords region of western Norway in the summer months. Travelling between May and September also gives you the best conditions for hiking in Norway.
