The stately Gamlehaugen mansion is the official holiday residence of the Norwegian Royal Family in Bergen. Dating to the Middle Ages, this Scottish baronial-style mansion had been home to many of the most prominent and wealthy people in Bergen. The home was then bought by the state in 1925 follow-ing the death of its last private owner Christian Michelsen, the first Prime Minister of Norway.
Now the entire first floor of Gamlehaugen is open to the public as a museum devoted to the memory of Christian Michelsen, and the interiors have been lovingly preserved as it was at the time of his death. Visitors can also stroll through the grounds and visit the stables, boat house, greenhouse and potato cellar.
Gamlehaugen is located about 6 km outside the Bergen city centre and has limited opening hours open in June, July and August.
